GRADUATION....photo credit A.Dmitriev

You can call it a deja vu kind of game.  Back last October 22, 2016 on a cool saturday evening, our boys played the Sasquatches de Soulanges for the first time.  Expecting a tough game and under very difficult circumstances, our boys came away with a 5-0 victory only to have it forfeited two and a half weeks later. After all, we were missing Sergen for one game, Laurent played with a fractured foot, my son Hunter having an allergy attack and not to mention the very very generous refs.

Our boys would play the Sasquatches three more times during the regular season.  Each and every time our boys would persevere and come out truly victorious even with a tie game.  We can all agree, they weren't just playing against another team, they played against all odds.  Ok, maybe I'm exaggerating a tiny bit but the depth and character they each had speaks volumes.

Fast forward to April 1, 2017...playing and eliminating DDO Pirates in the divisional final was to prove to themselves they really deserved top spot in the regular season.  The championship game didn't treat our boys any better.  If not, they were playing a vastly improved Sasquatch team, that eliminated the Braves, les Etoiles and the infamous Cobras.  The Phenix was missing the services of Sergen, had no lucky bounces, taking penalties including a 5on3. The only thing missing was a monster snow storm.

Playoffs usually brings out the best of the teams.  I thought, how sweet would it be if our boys can put this one for the story books.  With time running out and down 2-0, they had only fifteen minutes to rewrite the score sheet.  They did not fail! They gave me the fairy tale ending with a 3-2 OT win .  It's the best year to bring home the two banners (so far), besides Montreal's 375th, Canada's 150th, Stanley Cup's 125th, NHL's 100th, Hockey Lac St-Louis's 40th.  I know I rushed the ending to this blog but I will amend it when I find the right words...or not.  Hey, it's still surreal.

Our Champions Andy A, Luca M-V, Peter T, Justin C, Noah K, Gerry M, Sergen K, Laurent B, William N, Peter V, Rajan S, Daniel D, Jonathan S, my son Hunter, Joseph D, Loric G, Maxim C.

We are all proud of you boys.  I'm proud of you Hunter.

Phenix vs Aigles Finals

Congrats to our BTBB Phenix boys for being finalists at the 2016 Lachine Bantam Tournament. They fought and earned their way to the December 11th finals against les Aigles de Gatineau.  The dissatisfaction in the locker room speaks volumes of their passion to reach for the top.  They are winners in our hearts.  The Phenix coaches and staff would like to thank all the parents and family members who supported and cheered on the team throughout the matches.  We like to thank our boys for bringing home the banner to hang in the rafters.

Say it isn't so.... :(

It's official, some things are just not mean't to be.  I know many of the BTBB Phenix faithfuls are wondering what happened to our game #3024.  I have to own this one.  An oversight on my part concerning affiliated players cost our team a victory and coach Anthoni a one game suspension.  Rule 5.6.2 paragraph B states "a regular player may not sign more than once in the same season as an Affiliated Player..." No matter how many ways I like to read it, it just wasn't going to go our way.  There was many snip'its besides the game that made it particularly special. It's a shame that all the hard work from our boys in the game against the Sasquatch will be forfeited. I'm really gutted and I apologize...

ROAR.....

Game 3024...so I find myself sitting alone at the new MUHC a little past 1am Wednesday morning.  My son Hunter has an anaphylactic reaction to something unknown. Serious enough to warrant a trip to the hospital emergency room.

It's been a busy week for the Phenix team. First meeting between the team coaches and very supportive parents and then culminating to an exciting win in St Polycarpe. Expecting a tough game 6, our boys understood that playing at 110% was and is the only option. After all, they didn't drive 1hr out to the endless fields of harvested corn to lose. Many players stepped up their game and the hard work pays off. The officiating was definitely questionable and watching the video replays just made the Phenix 5-0 win more golden.  The score sheet does not tell the whole story of how the game went down. Some highlights that stood out...The awesome goaltending effort by Luca. The hand eye coordination passes by Gerry. The specialty offense, defense units.  Passionate roar from Jonathan. The big heart from Peter T to Peter V.  The call ups Sean and Justin Patrick. An overall contribution by everyone on the TEAM made the victory possible...no rest cause practice was just under 14hrs the next day.

It's 3:41am...Hunter is okay after the checkup.

Thanks to our photographer A.Dmitriev for capturing some spectacular moments.  After reviewing so many photos I cannot decide that one was enough to define our BTBB Phenix team spirit.  I needed three...

...temporary lost connection
by posted 2016/10/17

Game #3017...3am Monday morning and I'm trying to find the right picture and words to blog.  Hours before, my wife told me to move on..."just let it go, it is what it is".  I'm still puzzled at why the Habs organization would trade PK Subban. He was such an exciting and dynamic player.  I still remember the interviews he gave, always sending positive vibes to the bleu blanc rouge fans.  So many conspiracy theories but only time will tell. In the meantime, I'm just going to have to watch the Habs and the Preds...sigh.

That leads me to where I am right now...there is no 'right' picture to post.  Was I thinking our boys would win every game?  YES!  After all, we had a fantastic start to the season.  If I went into Vegas with that in mind, I would surely come away lighter on the scale.  I could find many reasons why our boys lost the connection but I won't.  I will just applaud the DDO Pirates on a great game.  They came in as the underdog and didn't panic.  Their plays are worthy of a second look.

The Phenix, our boys did a great job too.  They are allowed to lose...sometimes.

TEAM FOCUS....photo credit A.Dmitriev

Game 3014...visibility was poor and getting to this unfamiliar arena for me was nevertheless challenging.  The fall weather is definitely upon us. With 30 minutes before the drop of the puck, I receive an emergency text.  For a moment, the game didn't matter and the well being of one of our adopted families is of concern.  Laurent and his grandmother was involved in a car accident within walking distance of the arena.  Thank goodness everyone was ok as I arrived at the scene.  I can attest Laurent you have a very courageous grandma.  She told me to tell you "go have fun at the game and don't worry."  To be honest, I felt guilty leaving her behind but she assured me it was okay.

There was a large crowd on hand demonstrating the passion and support of the local team. Les Etoiles de Beauval will give our boys another test of endurance.  Even though there was music blaring from the Phenix dressing room you can ironically hear a pin drop.  Ok, I am exaggerating a bit but our kids were focused and organized.

Another win and a temporary claim to top spot in the division.  Post game dressing room chatter...without getting into too much details of the game itself, our kids as a team was somehow not satisfied with their performance. They felt they didn't put enough effort in the second period and maybe let it slip. They assured the coaches their best efforts are yet to come...wow!

RESPECT.....photo credit G.Law

Game 3012...Phenix first away game takes us to the Pointe-Claire Arena dropping in for a Royal visit.  The boys arrive early dressed in their appropriate attire as they did in the previous two games.  A great idea by Coach Anthoni and well received by the parents.

Let me introduce the players...tonights house keeping duties belongs to Andy followed by Luca, Peter T, Justin, Noah, Gerry, Sergen, Laurent, Will, Peter V, Rajan, Daniel, Big John, Hunter, Joseph, Loric, and Maxim.

Head coach Anthoni and his bench does a great job in building the team in a short period of time.  In just under three games the routine warm ups and pre-game drills are evident of the team bonding. Though the West Island Royals are struggling, nothing is taken for granted and the opponents statistics are history.  The team is well aware games can go just as bad quickly if they become over confident.  With that in mind, our boys open the scoring in the first period and end the night with their best performance yet. Goals and assists by Loric, Sergen, Joe, Gerry, Peter V, and Noah contributed to the 7-2 victory.  The Phenix defense was able to shut down any further scoring from the opposition. Definitely a great TEAM effort by everyone!

Tall orders...

Peter vs Goliath.....photo credit A. Dmitriev

Game 3011...with the first game in the books, a tall order was demanded from the BB Phenix.  When you hear of Lakeshore Hockey, you know it's going to be fast and physical.  The game did not disappoint on a warm October evening.  As both teams stepped onto the rink, I swear the Panthers look 30% bigger than our boys.  But looks can be deceiving and on that note, the Phenix put 110% on the ice.  Every inch of home territory was used and Luca defended the fortress.  As you can see from the photo taken, Peter T. had no qualms taking on the Panthers deep in their zone.  The early pressure pays off as Maxim C. nets in his first goal of the season with Justin C. assisting in the first period.  Both teams trade a penalty each and the Phenix ends the first period with a 1-0 lead.  The boys knew the Panthers would come out charging in the second period.  Our boys played a very disciplined game and confidence pays off just one minute into the second period.  Loric G. would put up the second goal assisted by the speedy Sergen K. The game would intensify throughout the second and third period and the physical aspect begins to up the play.  The Panthers are called on three penalties versus two by the Phenix in the third thus giving our boys a breather.  Though the Panthers were able to close the gap with one goal midway through the third, their bad penalties got the best of them and the Phenix close down the show with a deserving win.

Parents are always invited to submit their photos of our team.  We will try our best to post them.

...and the season begins
by posted 2016/10/04

Defending the house...period. photo courtesy of G.Law

A new season, a new format, new colors, new logo, same ole rink, some familiar faces, nervous smiles. Bantam level is a man's game as Ben explained to me.  If chosen to AA, body checking is on the menu and it isn't for the faint of heart.  Seeing a young player lying on the ice motionless reminds me of how fragile our kids are.  Being on the BB squad has body contact but no checking...scratching my head on this one.  The arduous selection of the team is not an easy one.  During the evaluating process, the players go through endless drills and scrimmages. Bouncing from one team to another seemed like infinity.  Nothing is perfect and unfortunately there will be disappointments.  Most of us as parents has gone through this tradition every fall season.  We celebrate with our sons and daughters or we curse and look for explanations.  The bubble is not where anyone wants to be but that is where the majority of players sit.  A few points separates them from being on one team to the next. I look at my son and a shrug of the shoulder is the only response I receive. Enough of the evaluations, he just wants to play hockey...

The first game came quickly for the BB Phenix.  We haven't learnt the names of all the players...and coaches (who are these guys?) yet and they barely had any practice time under their belts.  Game #3005 was versus the Mercier Braves who had defeated the DDO Pirates 5-1 the night before.  The stats on some of their players will definetly put our kids to the challenge. Just 2:33 into the first period we would let in the first goal and six minutes later, we would receive our first penalty of the season. Admittedly, some of the boys looked nervous but overall never out of pace.  The penalty kill was executed by a strong defense squad and that led to the Phenix first goal one minute later courtesy of Loric G.  No thanks to #81 again, the Phenix tie goal was a distant memory.  Second and third period is a whole new game and our kids were assured by the coaches they can tie it back up.  A tweaking of the lines starts to frustrate the Braves thus creating many opportunities.  The confidence begins to be more evident as our boys control more plays than the opposition. Both teams trade some more penalties and the Phenix took full advantage with Peter T. charging hard to the net and tipping in the power play tie goal of the night. The game would end 2-2 and a big sigh of relief and cheer from the home crowd.

The upcoming competition is fierce and not all games will end in our favor.  As usual, we put our faith into the coaches and let them guide our kids to new limits.  This season is about to look interesting!  In the next few days, the team will be sending out information on budgets and tournaments.  Please check your emails frequently for updates and scheduling changes.  We will try our best to alert you of any last minute information.
